Thx for the link Swan!
My take on the article:
....Do you notice an inherant contradiction in the article?
The article starts with: ..."Fearing an emerging crisis from a faculty shortage..."
Then it says: ..."Individual IIMs have a faculty strength of around 80..."
Again: ...."“Even as the demand for management education grows, we are not able to concurrently develop our faculty resources to match the requirement..."
- So it might seem to me logically that all these should add upto increasing the FPM in-take to address all the above issues in the future.
But! it finally reveals an amazing info: "...The average annual intake of doctoral students is 10-15 students at each campus..."
Invariably, if we each IIM can produce only 10 to 15 FPM's every year (provided every one taken in passes out in due time), among 80 faculty- it can be:
1) The IIM's want to maintain the quality & want to ensure that only the best pass out OR mentoring future Mgmt faculty might not be unfortunately the priority at the IIMs - with the exception of IIMB seeing the efforts that they are taking this yearBut apart from the above, the steps pointed out in the article if taken forward is a wonderful thing & the IIMs deserve the credit for taking the step in the right direction. In the doctoral program, learning is an integral part & each IIMs would have their own speciality. The student gets the bouquet to choose from, and this would help differentiate the IIM FPM since no other group of institutions can give that variety!
2) All said and done, Faculty shortage for Mgmt education is here to stay- and the shortage has to be filled by the other Management Ph.D granting institutes of India or Institutes abroad.
Regards,
Aju John...
